What does emergency treatment cost?

The costs for emergency treatment in our practice in Basel are to be paid by the patient and depend on the severity of the dental problems and the corresponding treatment. For example, treatment of a swelling or bleeding of the gums is usually less expensive than a broken or knocked-out tooth.

We do not charge extra for treatment on weekends or public holidays. Please refer to your insurance documents to find out whether and which costs for emergency treatment are covered by your insurance.

Please note that we require an advance payment of CHF 250 for emergency treatments for new patients.

Are costs for emergency treatment covered by the insurance?

Health and accident insurance

Dental treatment is only paid for by the health insurance if the dental damage is due to a serious and unavoidable disease of the masticatory system or a serious general disease. In this case, the health insurance pays the entire necessary treatment costs. In order for the costs to be covered by the insurance, the dentist must submit a treatment proposal to the health insurance fund. In the case of dental emergencies where no treatment proposal can be submitted, patients pay the treatment costs themselves and can claim them from the insurance company later if necessary.

The accident insurance covers the costs of dental treatment for the consequences of accidents. The scheme applies to persons in the employed relationship - non-employed persons, self-employed persons and children must apply to the health insurance fund. However, dental accidents must have been caused by an "unusual external factor".

Supplementary insurance for adults and children

Supplementary insurance for dental treatment and medication can be useful if you have frequent dental problems. You should ask an insurance advisor to calculate whether supplementary insurance is worthwhile for you. Supplementary insurance for orthodontics for children from birth is another way to protect yourself from high dental treatment costs.
