What are common dental complaints?

Problems with teeth do not just happen. Toothache is often the first sign of inflammation of the teeth, tooth root, gums or bone. To prevent the pain from getting worse and developing late effects, you should make an appointment with your dentist immediately if you have a toothache.

A hole in the tooth, misalignment of the teeth or new implants can also be triggers for painful teeth. We have listed common dental problems for you below:

Caries

The most common cause of dental problems, even in young children, is caries. A poor diet and bad oral hygiene are causes for the development of caries. Sugary food and incorrect brushing of the interdental spaces cause plaque to form. Plaque is a breeding ground for bacteria that converts sugar into acid. The acid attacks the healthy tooth enamel and caries develops. The consequences of caries are a hole in the tooth, discolouration of the teeth or tooth loss.

  • How is caries treated?

Treatment of caries is extensive, depending on the progression of the dental complaints. The diseased tooth is first cleaned of dirt, then drilled out and resealed with a filling.

Toothache sometimes also occurs during chewing and is accompanied by severe headache, backache and neck pain. In this case, temporomandibular joint pain is usually the cause of the complaints. However, the reasons for the symptoms can be varied and range from a malfunction between the upper and lower jaws, problems with the spine, teeth grinding to misalignment of the teeth. Only a dentist can find out what exactly causes the pain in the temporomandibular joint.

Temporomandibular joint disorders

  • How is TMJ pain treated?

Depending on the reason for the pain in the jaw area, individual treatment (e.g. therapies with splints, surgery, wearing braces) is carried out by a dentist or an orthodontist.

A new dental implant can cause dental discomfort for around four to six weeks after it has been placed. As implants are a dental surgery procedure, it is normal for the wounds to take about two weeks to heal. If the dental implant still causes pain, especially when chewing, four to six weeks after placement, the cause may be inflammation of the gums or bone.

Painful implant

  • How is toothache due to implants being treated?

During the wound healing process, painkillers, cooling and rinsing usually help. In case of later dental complaints, a visit to the dentist's office is urgently needed.

Karies

Kiefergelenksbeschwerden

Filling, bridge or crown fell out

Toothache is often caused by a defective or lost filling, crown or bridge. A leaking or completely fallen out filling as well as a displaced crown or bridge cause a throbbing or pulling pain especially by cold or heat as well as with sour or sweet food. No wonder, after all, the tooth roots are no longer properly sealed, so there is extreme sensitivity to touch and temperature.

  • What to do in case of a leaking or lost filling, crown or bridge?

If a bridge has fallen out or a filling or crown is defective, the dentist can reinsert or replace it properly.

Gum inflammation often occurs due to an infection caused by bacteria. The bacteria attach to the neck of the tooth, irritate it and cause the gums to swell. Tartar can also be a cause of gum discomfort, so you should make an appointment with your dentist especially if your gums bleed frequently. A late consequence of untreated gingivitis is periodontitis - the disease of the periodontium leads to the loss of teeth.

Periodontal problems, inflamed gums

  • How is gingivitis treated?

If there is discomfort due to gingivitis, professional teeth cleaning is performed and better oral hygiene and regular mouth rinses are often recommended by the dentist.

Why is dental treatment important?

Many people turn to painkillers when they have toothache. But medicines often only help for a short time and untreated dental problems usually cause recurring problems and, in the worst case, can even have a negative effect on the body's health. Therefore, you should not take dental health lightly and make regular check-ups with your dentist.

In the event of an accident or emergency, it is advisable to act immediately and visit an emergency practice such as Dienotfallzahnärzte.ch. Our team at the practice at the SBB train station in Basel consists of trained and experienced dentists. Thanks to our own laboratory with modern equipment and computer-assisted procedures, we have the possibility to offer you an immediate diagnosis and suitable dental treatments.

When is a visit to the emergency dentist urgently recommended?

Slight toothache or bleeding gums from time to time are symptoms that indicate that something is wrong with your teeth or gums. If these complaints occur, you should make an appointment with your dentist the next day and have the complaints clarified by a medical professional.

In the event of an accident or emergency in which a bridge has fallen out, a tooth has broken off or there has been a swelling of the cheek ("fat cheek") with severe toothache, you should not wait long. Emergency dental treatment is necessary, for example, in the case of:

Our tips: What helps against toothache?

Toothache interferes with everyday life and can also affect other areas of the body such as the head, neck or back. However, depending on the cause, toothache can be effectively relieved:

  • Pain relief through dental treatment

If tooth decay is the cause of dental complaints, a visit to the dentist is necessary. The dentist drills away the areas affected by caries and then closes the hole in the tooth with a tight filling. Pain in the root of the tooth or discomfort in the jawbone may indicate an inflammation of the root of the tooth that needs to be treated by a dentist. Opening and cleaning the tooth will relieve the pressure and therefore the pain. Gum inflammation can often be treated with medicines such as antibiotics. In addition, professional cleaning of the teeth and gum pockets can help inflammation heal. Ask your dentist! By the way: A visit to a dentist is the most effective way to combat dental problems in the long term!

  • Proven home remedies for toothache

When a toothache suddenly occurs, tried and tested home remedies are often an effective help. Especially if the tooth problems occur at night, at the weekend or on holidays, home remedies for toothache are usually a good first aid measure. Cooling the affected area on the face relieves acute toothache. A cold, damp cloth or a bag of ice wrapped in a towel will dull the pain. Mouthwashes have an anti-inflammatory effect - chamomile and sage tea, among others, are suitable for this. Teas such as peppermint, chamomile, valerian or lemon balm have a calming effect and can relieve pain in dental complaints. A lukewarm mouthwash of highly concentrated salt water can relieve toothache - hold the solution in your mouth for a minute and spit it out, do not swallow!

Important to know: If the toothache cannot be alleviated by home remedies, an appointment with the dentist is unavoidable to avoid later damage to the teeth!

  • Prevent toothache permanently

There's no question about it: the best remedy against dental problems is thorough oral hygiene and regular check-ups at the dentist. Regular tooth brushing with the right toothbrush and technique can prevent tooth decay and other dental problems from occurring in the first place. dienotfallzahnaerzte.ch recommend brushing your teeth at least twice a day to remove all food debris from the tooth surfaces. It is also a good idea to floss daily to thoroughly clean the areas that are difficult for the toothbrush to reach: the spaces between the teeth! It doesn't matter whether you use a manual toothbrush or an electric toothbrush - what matters is the right technique when brushing your teeth. Ideally, you should start brushing at the top of the outer side of the molar, using light upward and downward movements to brush the surfaces of the teeth and the spaces between them. Do not forget to massage the gums with the bristles of the toothbrush to prevent periodontitis. Then brush the inside of the teeth, the chewing surfaces of the rows of teeth and, of course, the molars and chewing ridges in the lower jaw in the same way. A mouth rinse after brushing your teeth will freshen your breath and also protect against deposits and bacteria.

Remember: Regular check-ups with the dentist every six months are important so that the first signs of dental disease can be detected and treated at an early stage.

Additional tips for healthy teeth

In addition to thorough oral hygiene, you can also prevent toothache with a healthy diet:

Avoid sugary foods as much as possible, as the glucose they contain promotes tooth decay.

Avoid sweets between the main meals so that the bacteria in the mouth do not constantly get new "food".

Visit your dentist twice a year for a check-up and ideally have your teeth professionally cleaned once a year.

Use a fluoride toothpaste and special tooth-friendly chewing gums to

strengthen the enamel.

What helps with hypersensitive teeth?

Dental complaints can also be caused by hypersensitive teeth. If hot, cold, sweet or sour foods hurt your teeth, exposed necks of teeth are often the cause. You can protect hypersensitive teeth by:

  • Do not press too hard when brushing your teeth so that the gums do not recede further.
  • Have the exposed necks of the teeth sealed by a dentist, for example with fluoride varnish.
  • Have the teeth crowned by a dentist - however, this is the last measure to protect hypersensitive teeth due to exposed necks of teeth.
