Recognise dental problems in children and take them seriously

When teething begins and the first teeth grow, there is often pain. Many children cry incessantly, some vomit or have diarrhoea. The first wobbly baby tooth is also completely normal during growth and usually no cause for concern.

However, if children frequently or suddenly complain of toothache or give up their favourite sweets because of aching teeth, a visit to the paediatric dentist is recommended. Most of the time, there are harmless causes behind the complaints, but even a small cavity must be treated early on to avoid later consequences such as inflammation, swelling or tooth loss.

The same applies to misaligned teeth, which are not uncommon with early milk tooth loss and therefore, are not a cause for concern. However, if crooked teeth in children are not treated or corrected, biting and chewing can be impaired and lead to jaw joint problems. In addition, crooked teeth and gaps between teeth can become a psychological burden in adolescence and adulthood.

Don't worry, we are here for you!

What are common causes of toothache in children?

Teething in toddlers

The most common and harmless cause of toothache in children is teething. A new tooth has to bore through the gums and exerts pressure in the process - it hurts!

What helps? Growing teeth can often be relieved with special chewing and biting rings or by cooling.

Wobbly milk teeth

Wiggly teeth usually fall out on their own eventually, but can cause pain or pressure points in the gums when chewing.

What helps? A loose baby tooth often falls out when biting on a carrot or apple, alternatively a paediatric dentist can remove the loose tooth.

Caries on the teeth

Sugar and poor oral hygiene promote caries in children. Milk teeth in particular are susceptible to bacteria. If they are not treated, a hole quickly develops in the tooth.

What helps? A low-sugar diet and thorough oral hygiene, even for milk teeth, prevents caries.

Nursing-Bottle-Syndrom

Brown or chipped baby teeth are often affected by Nursing Bottle Syndrome (teat caries). A sugared teat, sugary drinks and breastfeeding for too long can dissolve the enamel and damage the teeth.

What helps? Instead of sugaring the teat or giving the child sweet and sugary juices in the bottle, parents should rather reach for water or juice spritzers.

Swelling of the cheek

A swollen cheek accompanied by fever often indicates inflammation in the gums or bone.

What helps? Initially, swelling and inflammation can be treated with medication, so an appointment with the emergency dentist should be made urgently.

Injuries in the mouth

School-age children play and romp around, and injuries to the mouth, damaged teeth or tooth loss can easily occur.

What helps? In case of injury, tooth accident or tooth loss, it is best to visit the emergency dentist for children. The tooth can be kept in saliva or milk until we can place it in a rescue box at our practice. The affected area on the face should be cooled if possible.

Malpositioning of teeth

Crooked teeth usually occur in children whose baby teeth fall out too early and are rarely a cause for concern.

What helps? As a precaution against late effects, a visit to school dental clinics or orthodontics is advisable. Wearing braces can correct the malocclusion.
