Tooth preservation into old age

2. Juni 2025

A radiant smile well into old age is what most people want. However, the risk of losing teeth, whether due to tooth decay, periodontitis or other diseases, increases with age. If you act correctly, you can maintain your dental health for a long time. This is possible thanks to preventive dental care, innovative treatment methods and regular dental check-ups.

Most common risks for tooth loss

Caries, periodontitis, accidents and untreated diseases are among the main factors for tooth loss that patients are confronted with. We will discuss these risks in detail below.

Caries

One of the main causes of tooth loss and one of the most common dental diseases is tooth decay. It is caused by bacteria attacking the tooth enamel and slowly destroying the tooth substance. The proliferation of bacteria in the mouth is particularly favored by a diet rich in sugar and carbohydrates.

If the existing problem is not treated promptly by a dentist, it penetrates deeper into the structure of the tooth and can reach the tooth nerve. This results in severe pain and inflammation. In the worst case, the tooth may even be lost.

Periodontitis

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammation of the periodontium that can lead to tooth loss if left untreated. It is also caused by bacteria that colonize and inflame the gum pockets.

The first signs such as bleeding gums, swelling or an unpleasant bad breath are often underestimated. If the disease progresses, the jawbone is reduced, which in turn can lead to loosening of the teeth and ultimately to tooth loss.

Periodontitis is not only a danger in the mouth, but is also associated with general health risks such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. People who suffer from periodontitis therefore have a higher risk of having a heart attack or stroke.

Dental accident

Whether due to a fall, a sports accident or a blow to the mouth, a dental accident can happen very suddenly. It is then crucial to act quickly and correctly in order to save the affected tooth.

If a tooth has broken or even been knocked out of the mouth completely, it should be saved and taken to a dentist as soon as possible. Ideally, the tooth should be transported in a special tooth rescue box, which is available from pharmacies or dental surgeries.

Alternatively, the tooth can also be placed in ultra-high temperature milk, saliva or an isotonic saline solution. It is important to refrain from cleaning the tooth and touching the root of the tooth in order to avoid further damaging the sensitive tissue.

Untreated dental diseases

Dental diseases that are not treated pose a significant risk to oral health. Anxious patients in particular tend to put off visiting the dentist, so that minor problems can develop into serious illnesses.

Untreated teeth often lead to severe pain, inflammation and ultimately tooth loss, whether due to tooth decay, periodontitis or deep inflammation of the tooth root. But not only the teeth are affected. Chronic inflammation in the oral cavity can affect the entire body and increase the risk of other diseases.

Therefore, do not put off urgently needed treatment by a dentist for an unnecessarily long time. Rapid intervention has a significant influence on the course of the disease.

Promoting tooth preservation

There are a number of measures you can take to look after your teeth and gums. In particular, a healthy diet, proper dental care and regular visits to the dentist are essential.

Benefits of a healthy diet: the basis for strong teeth

A balanced diet plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy teeth. Foods high in sugar promote the growth of harmful bacteria, while calcium-rich foods such as dairy products, nuts, and green vegetables strengthen tooth structure and support the periodontium.

Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption in teeth and bones, while vitamin C strengthens the gums and helps prevent inflammation. Saliva production, which serves as a natural defense against bacteria, is stimulated by fruits and vegetables such as apples and carrots.

Dental Care: The Basis for Long-Term Oral Health

Consistent dental care is essential for preventing cavities, periodontitis, and tooth loss. Brushing teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste protects the teeth. Bacteria that can lead to inflammation are removed by cleaning the interdental spaces, preferably with dental floss. A water flosser can also be used for additional support.

An antibacterial mouthwash further supports oral hygiene. It is also particularly important to regularly replace the toothbrush to ensure optimal cleaning performance. With proper dental care, the foundation for a healthy oral environment is established, allowing teeth to be preserved into old age.

Modern Dentistry for Tooth Preservation

Modern dentistry offers gentle and pain-free treatment methods tailored to the needs of anxious patients. Soft anesthesia techniques and minimally invasive procedures allow for an almost stress-free experience.

Those who take care of their teeth not only avoid pain but also complex treatments. Regular check-ups are essential for the early detection and treatment of dental diseases.

Professional Teeth Cleaning (PTC): Professional teeth cleaning is an important measure for maintaining healthy teeth in the long run. Even with thorough brushing, deposits often remain in hard-to-reach areas, increasing the risk of cavities and periodontitis. PTC gently removes these deposits, cleans gum pockets, and polishes teeth to reduce new plaque buildup. A final fluoride treatment strengthens enamel and protects against acid attacks. Dentists recommend professional cleaning at least twice a year. It is a crucial preventive measure, especially for individuals at higher risk for periodontitis. Regular PTC keeps the gums healthy and maintains the balance of the oral flora. Even if your insurance does not cover the costs, investing in regular PTC is beneficial for your health.

Periodontitis Treatment: To prevent tooth loss and maintain a healthy periodontium, treating periodontitis is essential. In the early stages, bacteria and inflammation can be removed through thorough cleaning. For advanced periodontitis, deeper interventions are required to clean infected tissue and stabilize the jawbone. Modern procedures such as ultrasonic cleaning and laser therapy offer particularly gentle and effective treatments. After therapy, consistent follow-up care is recommended. Regular professional cleanings and careful oral hygiene help keep inflammation under control. Early action can successfully stop periodontitis and preserve natural teeth in the long term.

Treatment of Dental Accidents: A dentist can reattach or stabilize the tooth with a splint, depending on the severity of the injury. In many cases, the tooth can be saved if treated in time. Therefore, if you experience a dental accident, do not waste time—seek professional help immediately. Modern dental techniques allow for successful restorations, so even severely damaged teeth do not have to be lost.

Modern Root Canal Treatment: A root canal treatment is often the last option to save a severely damaged tooth. If the pulp inside the tooth is infected due to cavities, the dentist must remove the infected tissue from the root canals. To prevent reinfection, the canals are thoroughly cleaned, disinfected, and sealed with a special filling. Advanced techniques such as X-rays are used to improve treatment success. Many patients panic at the thought of a root canal treatment. However, thanks to advancements in endodontics, modern treatments are often pain-free and a highly effective alternative to tooth extraction.
